What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Skin resurfacing at Van Dyke Yun Dermatology is a nonsurgical treatment that uses pulsating beams of energy to remove dead and damaged skin cells one layer at a time with the state-of-the-art Alma Opus Plasma™ laser. The procedure is performed as a way to help our Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley, CA patients address facial lines and wrinkles and improve skin irregularities, like pigmentation, acne scars, and more for clearer, softer, younger-looking skin. This treatment can be customized to fit your needs and requires little recovery time. Call our board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Greg Van Dyke and Dr. Jasmine Yun, to schedule a consultation at our Studio City, CA office today.
Types of Laser Treatments
Van Dyke Yun Dermatology has three kinds of laser skin resurfacing treatments that are chosen based on your skin's needs.
- Ablative Laser Treatments
Ablative lasers remove thin layers of skin and are ideal for firming the skin and treating acne scars and wrinkles.
- Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Non-ablative laser treatments don't remove any skin — the light simply makes micro-injuries to the skin to encourage natural minimization of wrinkles and fine lines on those who are willing to wait several months for great results.
- Fractional Laser Treatments
Fractional laser treatments are both non-ablative and ablative that make small holes in the lower layers of the skin to treat deep wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage, and pigmentation issues for firmer, healthier skin.

"Best Cosmetic and Medical Dermatologist Possible! - I've been going to Dr. Van Dyke for over 12 years. I started seeing him for moderate botox treatments and medical skin issues when I was a professional model. Now I'm a busy mother of 3 young children trying to age gracefully but secretly! His "less is more" approach to botox and fillers enables the most natural results. He also always has the best and most cutting edge lasers on the market. Dr. Van Dyke is a renowned dermatologist who has been a professor at UCLA, and has his own pathology lab. His understanding of the complexities of skin enables him to better advise and administer treatments than nurses and most doctors. His focus on PREVENTION as well as correction is unique and priceless. My husband and I also see him for medical issues and we know we are in the safest hands possible. You can't go wrong with Dr. V. I always say "Van Dyke for Life!""- J. / RealSelf / Sep 13, 2020
What is the Laser Skin Resurfacing Process?
Laser skin resurfacing is designed for people who are unsatisfied with their overall complexion, whether due to sun damage, acne scars, age spots, wrinkles and fine lines, rough texture, scaly patches, redness, or more. Laser skin resurfacing isn't suggested for anyone who has very dark skin or active acne outbreaks.
A local anesthetic will be used to numb certain areas of the face if you're having a mild treatment while a form of sedation will be used for more intense treatments. During your procedure, we will pass our Alma Opus Plasma laser over the skin, directly targeting the specific surfaces for improvement. You may feel the warmth from the laser followed by cold air from the built-in cooling system. This cutting-edge treatment is designed to destroy damaged and dead skin cells while stimulating natural collagen production.
After your treatment, an ointment will be smoothed over your skin and you can return home to recover. You can expect the treated skin to look red and have some irritation and swelling for a few days. For those who had a milder treatment, the peeling process will last over a 3 – 5-day timeframe; however, more intense treatments could take 2 – 3 weeks. Regardless of the intensity, the treated skin will naturally flake, crust, and peel away. After the peeling is finished, your skin should feel smoother while looking younger, clearer, and rejuvenated.
