Non-surgical treatment for spider veins
Board-certified dermatologists Dr. Greg Van Dyke and Dr. Jasmine Yun offer a minimally invasive outpatient treatment called sclerotherapy to minimize or remove visible spider veins on the body. With sclerotherapy, the spider veins are injected with a solution that causes them to collapse, and disappear within 1-2 months.

What are spider veins and what causes them?
Spider veins can be an unsightly addition to the skin and cause embarrassment or self-consciousness. They are most prominent on the legs, so those with them often avoid wearing swimsuits, dresses, or shorts. These veins, called telangiectasia, are typically created by genetics, hormonal changes, obesity, sitting, standing, and childbearing, blood clots, and certain medications and medical conditions.
Usually blue, purple, or red, spider veins can be easily seen underneath the skin as they grow in branching patterns on the legs and face.
What can I expect at my sclerotherapy appointment?
If you are bothered by spider veins and are in good overall health, are not pregnant, or have a history of blood clots, you may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy at Van Dyke Yun Dermatology. After a consultation with Dr. Van Dyke or Dr. Yun, we will perform your sclerotherapy in a private treatment room quickly and without need of anesthesia.
Once the blood vessels being corrected are determined and the overlying skin has been sanitized, a fine needle will be inserted into the vein and the sclerosing solution can be introduced. The needle will be removed, and the injection site will be covered with gauze to treat any bleeding. We will repeat the process until all spider veins have been treated.
Once treatment is complete, you can leave our office to resume your daily routine. You may have mild swelling, redness, or bruising in the treated areas, but this will usually fade naturally. Compression garments will be suggested to help blood circulation after your sclerotherapy treatment for better, faster results. The treated blood vessels should shrink, turn white, and then disappear or fade. If more than one session is needed, we can help you schedule your appointment.
