What is Sclerotherapy?

Spider veins can be an unsightly addition to the skin and cause embarrassment or self-consciousness. These veins, called telangiectasia, are typically created by obesity, genetics, hormonal changes, blood clots, and certain medications and medical conditions. Usually blue, purple, or red, spider veins can be easily seen underneath the skin as they grow in branching patterns on the legs and face. Board-certified dermatologists Dr. Greg Van Dyke and Dr. Jasmine Yun offer a nonsurgical treatment called sclerotherapy to minimize or remove visible spider veins on the face and body. Schedule an appointment at Van Dyke Yun Dermatology in Studio City, CA to learn more about minimally invasive sclerotherapy, as well as other skin treatments.

How Are Spider Veins Eliminated?

Usually, spider veins are most prominent on the legs so those with them may avoid wearing swimsuits, shorts, or other clothing that reveal their spider veins. If this is you and you are in good overall health, are not pregnant, or have a history of blood clots, you may be a good candidate for sclerotherapy. After a consultation with Dr. Van Dyke or Dr. Yun, your sclerotherapy will be performed in a private treatment room quickly and without any anesthesia. The blood vessels being corrected will be determined, and then the overlying skin will be sanitized. A fine needle will be inserted into the vein and the sclerosing solution can be introduced. The needle will be removed and gauze will cover the injection site to treat any bleeding. The process can be repeated until all spider veins have been treated. You can leave our office to resume your daily routine. You may have mild swelling, redness, or bruising in the treated areas, but this will usually fade naturally. Compression garments will be suggested to help blood circulation after your sclerotherapy treatment for better, faster results. The treated blood vessels should shrink, turn white, and then disappear or fade. If more than one session is needed, we can help you schedule your appointment.
