What is Eczema?
Eczema represents a series of skin conditions caused by several allergic reactions or your body's response to an immune system deficiency. The outcome can result in inflammation of the skin, redness, and itchy patches similar to dermatitis. This can show up on your hands, neck, face, or any other area of your body. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form and is generally the consequence of an allergic response. This condition generally starts at a young age. At Van Dyke Yun Dermatology in Studio City, CA, board-certified dermatologists Dr. Greg Van Dyke and Dr. Jasmine Yun will help you diagnose what is causing your irritation so we can create a personalized treatment plan.

How is Eczema Diagnosed and Treated?
While it's not completely known what causes eczema, the environment, immune system issues, genetics, skin irritants, and skin barrier defects are the most common causes. This skin condition is typically characterized by dry, itchy, or red skin, as well as persistent breakouts. Generally, the itching starts and is followed by the rash. Most people experience patches of skin on the face, chest, neck, hands, or legs that are chronically itchy, dry, or cracked. In kids, spots typically appear on the inner creases of their knees and elbows. Once the skin is scratched, dry spots and open sores with scabs could develop and become infected. Serious symptoms, like pus-filled blisters or a yellow to light brown crust-over eczema spots, could be signs of a fungal infection.
Eczema is treated with a variety of prescribed or over-the-counter medication and ointments; however, hydrocortisone ointments and creams and antihistamines (like Benadryl) can also be used to help relieve symptoms. Prescription medications, such as immunomodulators or steroid creams, can help severe cases, as well as a corticosteroid or oral steroid. In more severe cases, ultraviolet light therapy or laser therapy might also be applied to the affected areas. When other solutions have failed, immunosuppressants may be prescribed as these medications suppress the immune system.
